Cowboys Proprietor Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture at Fans

The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.

“It was regrettable. It was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”

League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties

This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent examples involve:

  • Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
  • Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, making the penalty easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.

Recent Issues and Public Spotlight

This event follows a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt key defensive player Parsons to the Packers.

Moreover, Jones was a prominent subject in a streaming series that examined his influence in building the Dallas franchise into the globe’s highest-worth sports franchise, despite its recent championship drought.

The league’s action to penalize Jones underscores its continuing effort to uphold proper behavior among all team officials, regardless of their position or wealth.
