Much like bad weather swept through the northern region the night before, the home side blew the visitors away at the their home ground. It was a statement three-nil win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their title credentials as they consolidated their place at the top of the table.

Successive Defeats for Manchester United

This outcome marked successive league setbacks for the United manager's side for the first time since May 2024, putting them a significant margin off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

Manchester United's capacity to balance domestic and continental football with a thin team has been a frequently analyzed issue since they earned a place in the European competition. Considering the schedule, it always felt like this was the week that would fully examine this ability. Unfortunately for the visitors, they seemed weary all game, the landmark win against the French side clearly having taken a toll.

Team Changes

The United manager had sought to make changes with a several alterations. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all provided vigor, although the dropping of the in-form Malard to the sidelines caused surprise.

City, in comparison, have no similar loading issues. Andrée Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since healing from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

They converted their dominance with almost half an hour played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A cross to the far post was directed across goal by Shaw for Knaak to score. It was Manchester City's seventh headed goal of the term.

They extended their cushion with another pair of goals just before the half-time. When Rose was allowed to maraud through the midfield from the back, the pitch became spacious for City. The influential Casparij picked the ball up on the right side before sending a pinpoint low cross for Bunny Shaw to force home. Shortly later, they had a third after a quick change in possession saw Hemp allowed the opportunity to fire a shot home from outside the box.

Final Period

The clearest change came from Skinner at the half-time as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was too late to alter the outcome of the contest. Ex- City player Jess Park came closest, hitting the post, but the away team were offensively poor and were unable to register a one shot on target.

The hosts, in contrast, could have added to their cushion when a superb Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the hosts. Having failed to beat any team who placed above them last season, the manager's side now have victories against the Gunners and Manchester United to place them in a strong situation after nine matches.
