Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
